What You’ll Do
As a Principal AI Engineer, you will drive the evolution of our AI-powered products and solutions, shaping the future of education through innovative technology. This role leads the design, development, and deployment of scalable solutions using Generative AI and machine learning foundational models. You will be a hands-on technical lead, guiding the team in solving complex AI problems, architecting AI projects, and contributing to the AI strategy at Ascend. The position reports to the Principal Architect and collaborates with the Innovation, Architecture, NASM and Ascend ITS teams, coordinating with other stakeholders in the development process.

This position will work a hybrid schedule from our Gilbert, AZ office location.
How You’ll Spend Your Time
Lead the design, development, and deployment of innovative, scalable AI/ML solutions from conception to deployment, including building and optimizing AI models
Lead the team in building scalable, high-performance LLMOps pipelines
Design and co-own the Generative AI/ML system architecture, frameworks, tools, and processes
Stay current with the latest AI advancements, lead research initiatives, experiment with new algorithms, and identify opportunities for innovation (e.g., LLMs, embedding pipelines, generative AI search/retrieval)
Provide technical leadership and hands-on coding throughout implementation; align AI features with stakeholders to define AI and Product Roadmaps
Manage and preprocess large datasets; design efficient data processing pipelines; ensure data integrity and security in line with privacy regulations
Design and implement AI/ML models with feedback loops and automated re-training pipelines
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI capabilities into products
Provide technical mentorship, foster growth and innovation, and lead design reviews across projects
Ensure AI solutions are developed and deployed ethically, considering fairness, accountability, and transparency
Define project milestones and ensure delivery within deadlines
Contribute to coding standards, best practices, and documentation
Stay up to date with the latest AI developments and trends
What You’ll Need
Bachelor’s degree preferred in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence or related field; equivalent professional experience considered. High School diploma or GED required
6+ years in data and analytics or big data roles with at least 3 years developing analytical applications
Experience building and deploying LLMs, prompt engineering, context management, and embedding techniques using MS Azure and other cloud services
Strong understanding of ML and NLP, especially large language models and their integration, optimization, and evaluation
Experience with analytics/ML tools such as Python, NLTK, HuggingFace, SQL, and Snowflake
Experience with CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and ML lifecycle tools (e.g., MLflow)
Proven ability to translate innovative ideas into scalable solutions
Intrinsic motivation and a positive impact mindset
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills; aptitude for innovation
Leadership experience, with ability to mentor junior AI engineers
