Job Title:
Mid-Level AI Engineer / AI Developer
Location:
Ann Arbor, MI (On-site)
Duration:
12-month contract
US Citizen OR GC only
Job Description: We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on-site in the specified locations 4 days a week. We are seeking a Senior AI Java Engineer to play a pivotal role in building and evolving the technology that powers our core money movement and payment platforms.
In this role, you will operate as a technical leader who is both deeply hands-on and strategically minded, owning the delivery of new capabilities and critical roadmap enhancements for our core platform buildout (with a heavy focus on ACH, Fed Wires, and Checks). You will immerse yourself in our Java / Spring Boot ecosystem, applying modern engineering practices and tools-including GitHub Copilot, LLMs, and agentic AI-to build high-quality, scalable, and resilient software solutions encompassing batch and microservices builds.
You will guide implementation decisions, help accelerate the build-out of platforms, and ensure they remain secure, extensible, and well-positioned for future growth. In addition to core technical leadership, you will push the envelope on how AI-assisted development and emerging AI capabilities are thoughtfully applied within our engineering practices. You will partner closely with product owners, architects, and engineering peers to translate business strategy into technical solutions-mentoring engineers, shaping standards, and leading delivery across high-impact initiatives within a regulated financial services environment.
Responsibilities Provide technical leadership and hands-on delivery for large, cross-cutting initiatives across banking and money movement platforms. Own solution design and architectural decisions for complex, multi-system workflows spanning the entire payment lifecycle and across multiple payment networks and downstream integrations. Partner with product, architecture, and business stakeholders to translate roadmap initiatives and regulatory considerations into pragmatic technical approaches. Act as a technical standard-bearer within the organization-establishing patterns, best practices, and guardrails across code, integration, testing, and system design. Lead engineering execution, guiding technical direction, reviewing designs, and unblocking complex delivery challenges while remaining deeply engaged in critical code paths. Champion thoughtful use of AI-assisted development practices (GitHub Copilot, prompt engineering, agentic AI), helping explore and evaluate how emerging AI capabilities can improve productivity, code reviews, and solution quality. Drive engineering excellence and operational rigor, including automated testing, reliability, security, and production readiness; proactively mitigate architectural risks. Support and evolve production systems, participating in complex issue triage and root cause analysis to inform architectural improvements. Minimum qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). 7+ years of experience designing, developing, and delivering large-scale, distributed software systems with deep hands-on expertise in Java, Spring, and Spring Boot (including REST-based APIs and batch processing). 5+ years of experience working with cloud-native architectures, including containerized microservices and distributed system integration in public or hybrid cloud environments. 7+ years of experience building and evolving CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation (GitHub, GitLab, Bamboo, or equivalent). Demonstrated experience leading solution design and architectural decisions for complex, multi-system initiatives. Strong experience designing and enforcing automated testing strategies (unit, integration, and acceptance testing). Proven experience working with distributed and relational data stores (PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, DB2, Aerospike, or similar). Experience designing and operating event-driven and messaging-based architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalent). Demonstrated experience implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms (OAuth, SAML, etc.). Note: Candidates must be eligible to convert to full-time employment without requiring current or future employer sponsorship. Preferred qualifications
Experience designing or supporting money movement platforms within regulated financial services environments. Strong exposure to and understanding of common payment networks, particularly NACHA (ACH heavy focus), FEDWIRE, SWIFT, RTP, or FEDNOW. Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is highly preferred; AWS or Azure public cloud experience is also acceptable. Prior involvement in platform modernization or first-of-a-kind initiatives within banking or payment providers. Advanced experience applying AI-assisted development techniques beyond basic code generation-such as design exploration, agent building, test generation, and code reviews-within regulated environments.
