Applied AI Engineer
About the Opportunity
We're working with a venture-backed technology company developing AI-powered software for complex, highly regulated industries.
The business builds intelligent applications designed to improve how specialist information is processed, reduce repetitive work, and support more consistent decision-making. Its products combine modern software engineering with applied machine learning to address problems where accuracy, reliability, and measurable outcomes matter.
The team is continuing to expand its engineering capabilities and is looking for someone who can turn advances in AI into practical, production-ready applications.
The Role: As an Applied AI Engineer, you'll design and build AI-powered features that sit at the intersection of machine learning and software engineering.
You'll work across the development lifecycle, from prototyping new approaches and integrating language models to developing backend services, APIs, and the supporting infrastructure required to run applications reliably at scale.
Working alongside engineers and other subject matter experts, you'll help solve technically challenging problems where the quality of an AI system needs to be measured, tested, and continuously improved.
This is a hands-on opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working in a fast-moving environment, making technical decisions, and delivering software that has a tangible impact on end users.
What You'll Do: Design, build, and deploy applications powered by large language models and other AI techniques. Develop backend services, APIs, and software components that integrate AI capabilities into production applications. Explore agent-based approaches to automate complex, multi-step workflows and improve how users interact with software. Build evaluation frameworks to measure model quality, test different approaches, and identify areas for improvement. Apply statistical analysis and experimentation to understand system performance and make evidence-based engineering decisions. Work with complex datasets and domain-specific requirements to develop solutions that are accurate, reliable, and useful in practice. Collaborate with engineering, product, and specialist teams to translate challenging requirements into working software. Improve the performance, scalability, and maintainability of AI applications operating in demanding production environments. Contribute to technical design decisions and help establish effective practices for building and deploying AI-enabled products.
What We're Looking For A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience. Three or more years of experience in software engineering, machine learning, data-intensive systems, or a related technical field. At least one year of hands-on experience deploying AI-powered applications into production. Strong Python programming skills. Experience integrating LLMs into applications and understanding how to evaluate their performance. Familiarity with agentic systems, multi-step workflows, or tool-integrated AI applications. Experience with experimentation, model evaluation, or data-driven approaches to improving software quality. A solid understanding of backend development and the challenges involved in running production systems reliably. An analytical approach to problem-solving and the ability to navigate technically challenging requirements. Comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment where priorities can evolve.
Additional Experience That Would Be Valuable Experience developing software for regulated or data-sensitive environments. Familiarity with healthcare technology, enterprise data exchange, or interoperability standards. Experience building evaluation pipelines or monitoring the performance of AI systems in production. Knowledge of cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, or scalable backend architectures. Experience working closely with product teams and subject matter experts to develop specialist software applications.
Why Consider It? You'll join a growing engineering team working on challenging applications of AI, with the opportunity to influence how new capabilities are designed, evaluated, and delivered. The role offers a balance of hands-on implementation, technical problem-solving, and collaboration with people who understand the real-world challenges the software is designed to address.
It's particularly suited to someone who wants to build production AI systems rather than focus exclusively on research or experimentation.
Compensation and Benefits A competitive compensation package is available, with the final offer depending on experience, technical expertise, and location. The wider package includes employee benefits, paid leave, retirement provisions, and support for professional development. Further details will be shared confidentially during the recruitment process.
